8 Secrets for a Healthy Mouth

In order for you to keep your oral cavity healthy and fresh there are certain things you need to change in your routine.

Take a read and find out the 8 secrets to keep your mouth healthy.

Why should we brush our teeth?

Dental plaque, which is responsible for most periodontal diseases but also for caries development, is caused by a kind of “metabolic communication” developed between different microbial groups.

These microbes, pathogenic or not, use the oral environment to exchange necessary nutrients.  They become resistant to the body’s natural defenses and they can hardly be removed from the oral cavity. For this reason, oral hygiene must be daily and meticulous.

How many times a day should I brush?

The ideal would be to brush after every meal. But since this is difficult for the majority of us, experts recommend brushing at least 2 times a day, once in the morning and once at night before sleep.

If we have not eaten anything, can we skip brushing?

No. Dental plaque is not formed by eating. It is created independently and consists of bacteria from the normal flora of our mouth.

Which is the right toothbrush?

The toothbrush head should be small enough to reach all points of the mouth, and the bristles should be soft or medium in hardness. Don’t forget to replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months.

Which is the right toothpaste?

The recommended toothpastes are the ones containing fluoride. It helps to strengthen the enamel of the teeth against decay.

Which is the right way to brush our teeth?

Turn the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle and brush from the gum line to the edge of your tooth. Making circular movements. Don’t put a lot of strength towards your brush and teeth because this way you destroy your enamel.

The recommended time is at least 2 minutes. We split our mouths into quadrants and spent about 30 seconds each.

Finally, we brush our tongues so that we remove bacteria that often cause bad breath.

It is necessary to floss?

Yes, it is necessary, as the toothbrush can’t clean the surfaces between the teeth and below the gum line.

The interdental cleaning must be done with dental floss or interdental brushes at least once a day, preferably before going to bed.

It is sufficient to use just mouthwash for oral hygiene?

The most effective ways to remove germs from the oral cavity are the toothbrush and dental floss. Not by mouthwashing. This should be the cherry on the cake of oral care, not the cake itself!

Mouthwashes are used with brushing and always according to the dentist’s instructions.

Most contain alcohol and therefore careless use can produce undesirable effects in the long run.
