You can see exactly which areas it affects. And also how your dentist can treat it.

Periodontitis begins with bacterial growth in the dental plaque and it may proceed (if left untreated) with tooth loss, due to the destruction of the tissue surrounding your teeth.

In the early stage of gingivitis, bacteria in plaque build up causing the gums to become inflamed. When gingivitis is left untreated it can advance to periodontitis.

In a patient with periodontitis, we notice clinically and radiographically gum recession, followed by bone recession.

TREATMENT

The main goal of treatment is to control the infection.

The extend of treatment will vary, depending on the extent of the disease.

Dentists use a periodontal probe to measure the size of the pockets, it helps them count how deep they are, the deeper the pocket the more severe the periodontitis.

The dentist removes the plaque through deep periodontal cleaning, a method called scaling and root planing.

Scaling means scraping off the tartar from above and below the gum line.

Root planing gets rid of rough spots on the root’s surface, where the germs gather and help remove bacteria that contribute to the disease.
